Toy Story 3 – Review
First of all, I have to confess I never thought a third part would be coming, at least not until the last year. I am not a big fan from the first two parts, especially the second one, because some of the new characters did not convince me at all, like Jessie or Bullseye. Nevertheless, I went to see the thrid installment opened to any new offer and I was nicely surprised.
Once again, Toy Story 3 introduces us to the same toys we are already used to see on screen: Woody, Hamm, Buzz, Rex, Slinky, Mr & Ms. Potato Head, Jessie, Sarge, Bullseye, Barbie and the Three Aliens. Andy is now a 17-year old, and he is ready to go to college; this, of course, sets up the whole foundation of the film: what will happen with the toys? Are they going to be thrown away? Or sold? Perhaps… stored in the attic? The absence of some old toys can be noticed and this creates a lot of expectation, because we don’t know who will make it at the end of the film.
Then, we are introduced to Sunnyside, a daycare centre where the gang arrives because of a mistake. Of course, this means NEW TOYS!!! We immeaditely realize there is something going on in that place and that involves the newcomers: Lots-O’-Huggin’ Bear, the main antagonist of the film, Ken, who falls in love with Barbie, Big Baby, Twitch, Stretch, Chatter Telephone and Chunk. The daycare centre proves to be an excellent environment for any tricky and mysterious plan, and of course, works fantastically as a prison. Lots and lots of toys can be seen during these scenes, as well as many kids. This third film includes many human appearances which the other films did not have at all.
Bonnie’s room is the third place where we meet new friends, like Buttercup, Trixie, Mr. Pricklepants, Dolly and the lovely Peas-in-a-pod, whose names are Peatey, Peatrice and Peanelope. This new group of toys share one thing in common: they all seem to be part of a drama club, which gives them something unique. Probably here is one little flaw of the film, because personally, these toys deserved more time on screen.
Aside from that, what can we say? Toy Story 3 is a fantastic movie and definitely better than its previous installments. Fun and laughs are all around the place, as well as emotional moments (which are not that strong, except for the oversized oven scene). A lot of scenes have ingenious dialogues as well as actions and you can feel young again. You will end up talking about how you used to play with your toys, and as far as it goes, it is one of the best movies of the summer.
The animation used by Pixar is another special feature. Each detail has been carefully created, from the facial expressions of the human characters, to the soft and tender texture of Lotso. The daycare scenes have exquisite colours and decorative features, as well as the gardens. The clothes and outfits used by Ken are also quite impressive (and creative) and definitely worth-seeing.
You will barely notices some changes, probably the major one being Andy’s dog image, which is way too different from the one we saw on the second film. Let’s see some ups:
- Dialogues and actions: As always, they are the major support of this films, entertaining the audience at the best parts of each scene.
- OF COURSE! THE TOYS!
- Barbie & Ken: They are what any young girl dreamed of!
- Mr. Potato Head surely gets some of the best parts of the film.
- Environments and places: You’ll be delighted (as I have said)
- Peas-in-a-pod: You just can’t avoid loving them.
- Music: Fits where it is and helps a lot to create the emotional parts.
And now, the downs:
- Dialogues: Although they are the best feature of the film, they are also stage a disadvantage: sometimes you won’t be able to hear what the characters say because of the noise of the audience.
- Character development: Many viewers will be disappointed because of the lack of time some toys have have in the film. Many of them are quite interesting, and of course they could have done more. But at the end of the day, the movies is about Andy’s toys, people!
So, go and see Toy Story 3 people. You will be reminded of how great Disney movies used to be, and of course, a lot of memories will come up on your heads. Besides, it is an excellent option for the kids, who prefer to watch now more action and less emotion. I can assure you, this film has both of them in great quality and quantity.
The Ryder gives out 5 of 5 to Toy Story 3!
